Bovelli was one of my favourite local cafés. Back in early days, Barista Fabio Kaiser was serving fabulous coffee, along with Melanie Milos who just received third place in the 2018 Swiss Barista Championship last Friday. Both Fabio and Melanie have moved on and now work at Henauer. When I met up with the Bovelli crew at last weeks Coffee Championships, I couldn’t refuse the invitation to go by for coffee. I was happy to see Barista Mike behind the bar. Bovelli still offer their Classic and Modern coffee menus. I chose the STOLL from the Modern menu. The Flatwhite was creamy, fruity and sweet. Loved it! It was so nice to just sit at the bar, chat and laugh with Mike and the crew and just enjoy the busy Bovelli atmosphere like the good old day. After all, that is all part of the coffee experience.

Bovelli opened it’s doors in September 2014 in the heart of Zürich, where Bar Infinito once was in Kreis 1. Being the younger sibling of Grande and Dante, two of the best bar’s in this fabulous city, the challenge to make their own mark as one of THE places to go for the best espresso (and cocktails) was on.
With a 5 yet to be handed out in 2014, I was curiously excited to meet Bovelli. A part of me felt like we had already met, even before I walked through the door. Would it be magic when our lips finally touched time and time again? And would I choose to give a 5? Needless to say, I was ready to find out.
A place of class, coolness, talented Baritas and elegant espresso. It has Italianità, it’s own unique city style, and takes Zürich’s centre stage with no hesitation. As Andrea Bocelli sings ‘Time to say goodbye‘ – we sing `Time to say HELLO!`. In just 3 short months this place has transformed itself from the old style that stood to the new, dynamic, trendy, friendly café bar that it is today. Find your place at the bar for that morning or midday shot of espresso, or beautiful Cappuccino or Latte. I like the way they have transformed the seating as well so that it’s comfy and relaxed. The advantage of having Dante and Grande as siblings is that the Baristas rotate locations. That, and as well as getting great coffee, you also get to experience amazing cocktails. Perfect place for after work aperos, pre-dinner drinks or mid-shopping motivation!
I still remember the first time our lips touched – the Bovelli espresso and mine of course. It was delicate, yet strong, smooth and lightly fruity. Beautiful. The second time, it was more that carmel, chocolate, spicy sensation. Delicious. The third time I thought, I have to introduce this place to my Mum! So I did! Mamma Mancuso happened to be visiting, so we dropped by. In additional to being one of the most amazing women I know, she is also pretty damn straight when it comes to good and bad espresso. Did she approved? YES! The Prayer was answered!
Bovelli offers 3 espresso blends to try and all are provided by Switzerland’s own Henauer Kaffee. Ask the friendly staff for your preferred type. You will not go wrong with any of the 3, it just depends if you feel freakishly fruity or deeply arabica. The machine behind the cool bar is a finely tuned Dalla Corte Evolution. (If you happen to be there on a Saturday, you may also see some other types of finely tuned machines accelerating outside).
And don’t forget to go back there for a cocktail!
